Traditionally bees wax hemp cord has primarily been used for binding hard bound books. Another popular use is candle making where hemp cord is used for the wick. Hemp is a preferred natural fiber as it does not burn too quickly. Some cotton wick candles contain a lead core to extend the burn time. However, this also leads to poor indoor air quality and may cause problems with human and pet health. Therefore, hemp is an alternative to cotton for candle wicks.
In more recent years, a specially made hemp wick that is heavily coated in beeswax is used for smoking purposes. Uses of these hemp wicks do so as they prefer to burn natural hemp cord and beeswax as their lighting device rather than rely on butane lighters. This way they are inhaling natural materials over that of carcinogenic butane.
